For one, when the brightness slider doesn't disappear, it's not uncommon for it to be set to either 100% or 0% until I move the slider. Also, when I hook up the monitor, the volume for the audio output on the monitor is usually set to 100%. These things happen even if I have the monitor plugged in during boot and see the SDDM login screen on my external monitor.
