You're not accessing it > from Dolphin or the file browser over an nfs:// path, right? Exactly: the remote volume is mounted in /etc/fstab and so appears to kde as if it is a local folder. My guess is nobody ever expected it might be a remote folder and might not always be available. Including a quick check and failing gracefully would be optimal.
