The Synaptics driver did not only offer this binary setting, but also allowed to define a white-list of mouse-like devices that do *not* disable the touchpad. Here, I e.g. added the "Logitech Spotlight" virtual laser pointer or the touch-screen input device I get when attaching our classroom equipment via USB.
