Exiv2 does not support more than 65535 bytes. Even though we do a lot with ExifTool, digiKam is based internally on Exiv2 for preparing the metadata. At the moment, I do not see this limitation in Exiv2 being fixed in the near future. For us, the only solution is to write completely natively with ExifTool, with all its advantages and disadvantages (slow).
