I don't think the current state of having multiple tabs which can each be in
split view mode is strictly worse than what is requested here. I assume it
depends on the workflow of users whether they prefer having split view mode
within each tab or tabs within each split. For example the current state works
well when a user uses tabs to keep distinctly separate tasks organised. They
would not need to mix and match the various split view tabs then. So just
replacing the current behaviour with what is requested here is IMO likely to
not be the correct way to proceed.

Given all that and considering that Dolphin is supposed to be simple by
default, I am not sure what should best result from this bug report. I am also
not sure if the added complexity implementing this change would do more harm to
Dolphin development long-term than the expected advantages for the people who
are requesting this.
