Going to: System Settings > Search > File Search, and unselecting "Enable file
search" let Dolphin find files in my home directory and subdirectories.

Otherwise with "Enable file search" selected, the behaviour was the same as
described by Edward: no files found unless searching outside of my home
directory.

Dolphin 15.08.2 on Kubuntu 15.10 with updates from backports PPA
