If it isn't doing that properly, you're most welcome to take a look and see if you can fix it. I'm saying this because I've tried my darndest best to make sure the build fails if no backends can be built, and in most systems this works well. But in some cases they don't. Unfortunately on my system the build fails perfectly if the XCB dev headers aren't installed, so I can't exactly test every possible failure mode.
