That solution sounds as if you are only tracking log ins. So anytime you call that 
variable, it reports back the number of successful logins since the bean that 
instantiated the variable was created.

I don' think that gets the job done. I am afraid that there isn't a JSP solution for 
this. However, you could write a bean that tracks sessions and keeps a tally of active 
sessions.
