Review Comment:
   With this change, any developer or CI agent running `./gradlew check` will 
have their local source files silently modified if the version is out of sync.  
Will this surprise user? How about we remove the `dependsOn` and add comments 
to `gradle.properties` to ask release manager run `./gradlew updateVersion` 
explicitly? Or refactor this as `verifyVersionSync` and run it during `check`?
