There was a ticket that we had excessive logging which looks like its caused
by newNode.size equalling 0 which results in:
int offset = this.randOffset.nextInt(newNodes.size());
throwing an exception. Instead i'll check the size of newNodes and return
null if its empty which is handled higher up for no nodes being found.
UTs for newNode size = 0 and being handled correctly.
