The discussion of HJ's tech support, and in particular one lister's story
involving one lister being told not to use Partition Magic brings to mind
an experience I had back when JFW was fairly new, and I was predominantly
using DOS with JFD. A particular Tech Support rep, now a veteran there,
who I will leave nameless, chided me, upon finding out that I replaced
Command.com with JP Software's command processor 4DOS. He told me that
such a "radical" change in the operating system might prevent Jaws from
working as expected. I found out to my own experience that JFD works at
least as well, and in some aspects, better under 4DOS. At the time, I
chalked it up to the perceived notion of that time of a courtship between
HJ and Microsoft, and just took it with a grain of salt. Later, however, I
was working with someone higher on the ladder, when correcting a problem
with an authorization key, and his attitude seemed to be more positive when
he found out. The moral of the story being that one rep should not be
construed to represent the entire company.

There is, however, a problem with 4DOS in the installation program of JFW
3.x. I have found that I need to rem out the shell= line in Config.sys and
reboot before running the setup program, or the installation aborts with an
error something like "Cannot find the network Path xxxx synth.inc @write".
%@write happens to be one of 4DOS's variable functions, and I suppose that
the @write is misinterpreted by the command processor. After the
installation, the rem can be removed. I was just wondering if HJ is aware
of this, and has posted such a warning, or promised a fix. Thanks.
