JFW and Umlauts

Hello all:
 
JFW cannot at present identify the German umlauts or half-vowels on my
computer; it reads them as anci characters. Is it possible to get JFW to
recognise these characters and pronounce them as "a umlaut", "o umlaut"
and
"u
umlaut"? If yes, how do I do it? Thanks.
