This is most likely a bug in NVidia's OpenGL implementation.
They don't have a public bug-tracker (not even an unofficial one like ATI), so 
the only possible way to report bugs are there linux discussion forums:

Does its also crash with -Dsun.java2d.opengl.fbobject=false?

No, NVidia has its own (quite well working) 2D acceleration architecture, so 
this won't have any effect.
