I'm pretty sure these problems are caused by the previously mentioned FBO regression in Nvidia's drivers, discussed in this bug report: http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6545140
An updated driver has been a long time coming, but my contacts at Nvidia tell me there should be a new driver posted within the next week or two that corrects these problems. I've located a desktop machine in the office that has the same problem with our software. It is a Dell Precision 380 running Windows XP sp2 and Java 6 u1. The gpu is an nVidia Quadro FX 3500 with driver 91.48.
