what you can do straight forward is the following:
\begin{author}\format[HTMLChars]{\author}
\end{author}\begin{editor}\format[HTMLChars]{\editor} \end{editor}
instead of
\editor
in the first case if you have no author but an editor, only your editor
will be printed.
But I assume you do not want to print both if there are authors and
editors. I do not know how to do this, but to be honest, I don't know
whether it makes sense, because nobody can differenciate between authors
and editors in your output.
Wouldn't it be better to differenciate between different types of
publications and use an extra export format for each type (e.g. collections
that have an editor; and books that have an author)?
