Last summer I installed JabRef 2.7 on a windows xp comuter and changed some

even after a complete deinstallation (both jabref-uninstall.exe and windows
systemadministration) of the program and a subsequent reinstallation both of
JabRef 2.7 and 2.7.3 these mistakes were still there. these changes did not
affect the settings for different users on the same system/computer, so I
figure that there must my personalized configuration files which I have not

Hi,

on Windows, the preferences are stored in the registry. If you run
Regedit, you should be able to find it under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and
Java or Javasoft or something like that, I don't remember exactly. I'm
not sure if you can easily delete the parts of the registry relevant
to JabRef, but if so, it would be regenerated with default preferences
next time you run JabRef.

Correct. The easiest way to find the relevant part is by searching for "JabRef" in the registry editor. You will then find many things, like the location of the program, the link to the uninstall procedure, JabRef in the Start Menu (if you have put it there), ... But you will also find "JavaSoft/Prefs/net/sf/jabref" where the settings of JabRef are stored (they are easily recognized). I found this path both in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" and "HKEY_USERS", undoubtedly because new versions of JabRef are installed for "current user" as well as for "all users". Since I am the only user of my XP system, this doesn't bother me. Several years ago I too had the problem that I wanted to start with a clean installation, but didn't know where JabRef was 'hiding' its settings. Somebody told me that it was in the registry. And indeed. After deletion of "jabref" in "JavaSoft/Prefs/net/sf/jabref" all settings were gone. This is /including/ those that you might want to have saved, by the way! I am thinking in particular of the JabRef settings of the other users of the system.

Mart.
