org.apache.maven.plugin.assembly.archive.task.AddArtifactTask#execute near
AddArtifactTask.java line 145:

I think the directoryMode (or the defaultDirectoryMode) should be set to a
default value anyway. Or that the Archiver from plexus-archiver should do that
automatically.
