Chris, I've been using this approach for quite a long time because it seemed
great - you only need to specify version once, in a property, and you can
reference it wherever you like.
But recently I came across the problem connected with this approach - see here
http://stackoverflow.com/a/3685248. In two words, Maven doesn't substitute
property reference into property value in project.version when installing or
deploying artifact which leads to problems if some other project depends on
this artifact.
