tagBase not working for release:branch goal

I am trying to branch to a different directory than <head>/branches. I tried:
mvn release:branch -DupdateBranchVersions=true
-DupdateWorkingCopyVersions=false -DautoVersionSubmodules=true
-DtagBase=file:///someotherplace
But still goes to <head>/branches and not to "someotherplace"
