Alternatively, could we document the current behaviour? Even if it is a regression, we could consider it as an acceptable regression if the previous behaviour was not producing what the user may have expected anyway. Or if we want to clamp, then clamp only for the case where the date is specified as a number of seconds because this is already handled as a special case anyway, but otherwise do not parse the date.
