slachiewicz opened a new pull request, #916:
URL: https://github.com/apache/maven-wagon/pull/916

Forward-port of #905 and `20c10e64`, both of which landed on `wagon-3.x`
only. master
has had no prose documentation beyond the index page, so the two lines
differ by three
   guides: `user-guide.md`, `developer-guide.md` and `http-configuration.md`.

Not a straight copy. The two branches have diverged since #905, and the 3.x
text
describes mechanisms master no longer has, so the affected sections are
rewritten:

   | Section | 3.x text | this branch |
   | --- | --- | --- |
   | Registering a provider | `@plexus.component` javadoc tag +
`plexus-component-metadata` | `@Named` + `sisu-maven-plugin`, plus `@Typed` and
when *not* to use `@Singleton` |
   | Configurable properties | `@plexus.configuration default-value=...` |
plain field, setter, initialiser for the default |
   | TCK configuration | inline `<useCaseConfigs>` tree |
`<useCaseConfigsResource>` naming a classpath resource |
   | HTTP headers long form | "works with the older `plexus-container-default`
used by Wagon's own tests" | dropped; the tests run on the shim now |
   | Extension example | `3.5.3` | `4.0.0-M1` |

   ### One section needed more than a touch-up

The user guide told embedders to build a bare `DefaultPlexusContainer` and
said the
descriptor a provider carries "is picked up automatically". That is no
longer true here.
With classpath scanning off, such a container reads only
`META-INF/plexus/components.xml`
and therefore finds `wagon-http` and `wagon-webdav-jackrabbit` — which keep
hand-written
descriptors because they map one class onto several hints — **and no other
provider**.

The section now shows `SCANNING_INDEX` and names that partial failure
explicitly, since a
lookup that silently stops resolving for some schemes but not others is easy
to misread.
This is the downstream note flagged on #912; it seemed better placed in the
guide than
   only in release notes.

`site.xml` gains the Guides menu. Site builds clean, all three pages render
and are
   linked; full reactor green.
