m2 plugin not reading ~/.m2/settings.xml <servers>

I have SSH deployment specified in the POM <distributionManagement> node, and
specify user credentials (username, password) in ~/.m2/settings.xml.
When I try to execute goal "deploy" the user credentials in settings.xml are
ignored.
Note that the deploy goal works fine from command line.
