Cannot Add Maven 2.0+ Project using HTTPS url to POM

When I try to add my Maven 2 project using a url in the form:
https://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/svn/project/trunk/pom.xml
I get the error [The URL you provided doesn't exist] along with the following
stack in the log:

I found earlier bugs that were supposed to address this problem, I believe, but
I don't think it's fixed. I had a look at the code, and the problem seems to
be happening on this line:
InputStream is = url.openStream();
Could this have to do with the JSK being used perhaps? FYI, I am using
jdk1.5.0_06
