Thanks Dawid and Michael for the detailed explanations and guidance here! Yes 
the recommended approach and reasoning makes sense, as it both simplifies the 
interfaces that need to be created, and also gives application developers the 
freedom to implement their own metric aggregators depending on the needs 
(without being forced into a specific way of using the recorded event).

To summarize, here’s the basic outline of the changes needed, please let me 
know if I miss anything:
 # New *IndexWriterMetrics* interface with initial two methods for begin / end 
merge events
 # Add setter in *IndexWriterConfig* / *LiveIndexWriterConfig* to allow 
providing implementation of *IndexWriterMetrics*
 # In *IndexWriter*, invoke *IndexWriterMetrics*‘s methods when an 
implementation instance is available
 # No need to provide default implementation to *IndexWriterMetrics* in Lucene

I guess there’s an aligned solution to this issue then? Shall I get started 
working on a PR?
