# Rationale for this change
Python 3.10 reached end of life on 2026-10-01, and the Python devguide now
lists it as unsupported. This pull request drops Python 3.10 and raises the
pyarrow floor to 23.
Current pyarrow (26) and pandas (3.1) publish no 3.10 wheels. Our extras set
a minimum version and no maximum version. On Python 3.10, pip therefore
picked
pyarrow 25.0.1 and pandas 2.3.3. On Python 3.11 and newer, pip picked pyarrow
26 and pandas 3.1. The library ran on two major versions of its main
dependency, and CI could test only one of them.
The pyarrow floor moves from 18.0.0 to 23.0.0. That floor is the lowest value
that makes three version checks unnecessary:
- 20.0.0 for AzureFileSystem
- 21.0.0 for the S3 tls_ca_file_path option
- 23.0.0 for max_rows_per_page
## Are these changes tested?
- uv lock --check passes.
- uv run prek run -a passes, including ruff, ruff format and mypy.
- The unit tests for the changed areas pass: 1107 passed, 3 skipped
(tests/io/test_pyarrow.py, tests/expressions,
tests/table/test_partitioning.py,
tests/table/test_inspect.py, tests/test_conversions.py,
tests/utils/test_datetime.py).
- The full CI matrix does not run locally. The 3.11 to 3.14 jobs will confirm
the matrix change.
