Update: I've reproduced this with a unit test in `TestTableMetadataCache` (DROP COLUMN → ADD COLUMN with the same name). Before the fix, `TableMetadataCache.schema()` resolves to the historical schema with the retired field id (the test fails with `expected: 4 but was: 3`).
