Hi @kevinjqliu, I'd be interested in contributing to this issue if it's still relevant and unclaimed. My understanding is that the goal is to make merge append the default to improve metadata management. Before implementing it, I'd like to confirm the expected behavior, particularly whether fast append should remain explicitly configurable and which compatibility tests would be required.
