Yes, this is great timing, I just started working on a fix for this. I had a very similar approach in mind. @vaultah do you mind fixing the position delete files rewrite as well? see https://github.com/apache/iceberg/issues/12554 We generally add changes to only the default spark version (4.0 now) and backport to older versions later.
