I believe that there are many organizations using Iceberg currently that are using the HiveCatalog. That is why I am keen for this work to go in. Hive 2 and 3 are EOL, but still being used, but Hive 4 is where Hive development is, and that is why it is important to support Hive 4. However, we know that Hive 4 has already broken compatibility with Hive 2 and 3, and more breakages can happen in the future. This raises doubt on the wisdom of using a single iceberg-hive-metastore.jar to support both Hive 4 and earlier Hive versions. While many users still use the HiveCatalog, the REST catalog is the future of Iceberg. For this reason, in Iceberg 2.0, we may decide to unbundle support for other catalogs from the engine runtime jars. -- This is an automated message from the Apache Git Service.
