I understand your point, and I agree this should not replace the current preview behavior. What I had in mind was just an optional safe preview mode, so developers could inspect the pipeline without risking writes to databases or files. For me, the main benefit is in day-to-day development. Right now, if the developer still has to manually disable output steps, it often becomes easier to just run the pipeline normally instead of using Preview. Because of that, Preview ends up not being used as much as it could be. So the idea is less about changing Preview itself, and more about making it practical and safe enough to actually be useful during iteration. I also agree that some cases may require real updates during Preview, which is why I think this only makes sense as an option.
