This is kinda a backport of https://github.com/apache/hbase/pull/7963 to `branch-3`. The patch did not apply cleanly so I had to resolve some conflicts. I think it makes sense to point to new documentation in `branch-3` because we don't host a versioned 3.x documentation on the website. For 2.x branches we host versioned documentation on the site, so I guess backporting to `branch-2`, `branch-2.6` and `branch-2.5` does not make sense.
