my version of Mac. I was able to resolve by moving to JRuby 9.2.21.0.

I had the same experience. The HBase shell built from the tip of branch-2.5 
doesn't run on my Macbook (Sequoia) with the same error. Rebuilding it with 
9.2.21.0 fixes the issue.
