It turns out that any slashes at the beginning of the first key, for example
"/region////key" are removed from the key (in this example the actual key would
be "key" instead of the expected "///key").
Also consecutive slashes anywhere else in the key become a single slash (for
example "/region/key//one//" the key would be "key/one/" instead of the
expected "key/one/".
