I ran Intermapper for 13 years. We had 6 Intermapper servers. Some on Mac OS X. 
Some on Linux.  Intermapper on Linux is excellent.

I agree with Hans that you wouldn't want to use a VM if you only have a single 
Intermapper server. 

I also agree with Michael Graziano. If you are a Windows shop and monitoring 
Windows services is important to you then you should run Intermapper on a 
Windows Server so that you can use the WMI probes, which in my opinion are very 
good.
