Yeah, Freetype has been getting better but in practice they didn't include the 
major changes. I think cost was cited as one of the reasons not to.

At the same time as changing the Qt version? Nothing that qualifies, and I 
tried going back to 5.8 too. 
I can of course have a look at that new stem darkening code, what files would I 
be looking at?

Did I suggest blurry somewhere to refer to the changed font rendering in Qt? If 
I did it was probably because text does get to look a bit blurry when you make 
it pale or bold enough, but the issue here is mostly too-pale fonts with the 
default gamma setting.
