We believe this more an issue for our users (app developers), than for us - we can distribute it, but its use is patent protected, though with many free use exceptions. Each app developer needs to resolve if they can and want to use the patented codecs or not. So we haven't tried resolving it beyond making it easier to enable at compile time and better documented (in 5.6)
In other words, you still need to build from source in both Qt 5.5 and 5.6. Be warned the name of the QMAKE flag changes slightly in 5.6 as it got standardized and documented.
