It seems that the "problem" exists in 5.4.2 as well so it's definitely not a regression.
I have created QTBUG-46809 to track this issue. My uneducated guess is that it has something to do with the way WebEngine accesses the network as all the symptoms are just like I am using a 256K dial-up modem (instead of the 120Mbps cable modem I am actually using). I've just tried the quicknanobrowser from the 5.5.0 RC MSVC 2013 x86_64 package on Windows 8.1. Performance is fine there with google maps and other complex sites. Please try the latest package, and also compare with a Qt 5.4 build. If you still encounter bad performance, please open a bug report and attach the output of the qtdiag tool.
