fontconfig is installed. I'm on Gentoo Linux, so that means headers are
also installed:

   /usr/lib64/pkgconfig/fontconfig.pc
   /usr/lib64/libfontconfig.so
   /usr/lib64/libfontconfig.so.1
   /usr/lib64/libfontconfig.so.1.5.0
   /usr/include/fontconfig/fcprivate.h
   /usr/include/fontconfig/fcfreetype.h
   /usr/include/fontconfig/fontconfig.h

The fontsampler example also has the same problem. Guess I'll be filing
a bug.
