You can export a key pair from GnuPG and import it into Thunderbird.

"Support" how? Did you export your key pair from Thunderbird and
import it into GnuPG?
I suspect the piece of the puzzle you are missing is that GnuPG and
Thunderbird keep their key pairs in separate places.
If you want to use the same key pair in both programs, you have to
export/import the key pair yourself.
