Yup, "no" to both.

Looking at their download page:

http://gmane.org/dist.php

they mention using INN, Usenet server software.  So they're
gatewaying email lists into Newsgroups.  And not using IMAP
software at all.  This is what I did, although they're
obviously a lot more sophisticated.

Several email clients -- eg alpine, sylpheed, claws-mail, etc --
appear to have the functionality to use an NNTP server that's
separate from an IMAP server.  So distinctions can get a bit
blurred...
