Is there any particular reason why this is restricted to Perl >= 5.8.5
for DESTDIR? My reading of 5.8.4's ExtUtils::MakeMaker docs on 5.8.4
suggest that it will work fine.

Possibly a test of MakeMaker version would work better (regardless,
aborting the entire SMakefile is a little antisocial when those who
don't need the particular Perl modules don't really care about this
value)

I'm not aware that anyone outside of CMU uses smake for compilation, as it is a custom part of the Andrew system.
