Have you tried synctest?

Usage: synctest [options] hostname
-p port : port to use (default=standard port for protocol)
  -k # : minimum protection layer required
  -l # : max protection layer (0=none; 1=integrity; etc)
-u user : authorization name to use
-a user : authentication name to use
-w pass : password to use (if not supplied, we will prompt)
  -v : verbose
-m mech : SASL mechanism to use
-f file : pipe file into connection after authentication
  -r realm : realm
-t file : Enable TLS. file has the TLS public and private keys
(specify "" to not use TLS for authentication)
-c : enable challenge prompt callbacks
(enter one-time password instead of secret pass-phrase)
  -n : number of auth attempts (default=1)
-I file : output my PID to (file) (useful with -X)
-x file : open the named socket for the interactive portion
-X file : same as -X, except close all file descriptors & dameonize

Also, don't you want sync_log: 1?
Otherwise there will be no log file for sync_client to use as input.

Do you have cysnc defined in /etc/services?

try forcing the use of port 2005 when connecting.
