I think we are saying the same thing: the current behaviour needs to be default.
I personaly think that this filtering belongs in MTA.
The following sentence from 3.1 would seem to indicate clearly that the default should be to ACCEPT the mail...
"However, when interpreting messages, these tokens MUST be honored as part of the legal syntax."
