We run postfix and cyrus on separate machines. On the cyrus machine, we use tcp-wrappers to permit lmtp connections from only our postfix machines (so malicious users cannot inject messages directly).
I don't see a reason to encrypt the lmtp connection, but maybe that's a requirement in your case.
