I still would be very interested in hearing this group's thoughts on my concerns and how they deal with issues of user migration, user renaming, etc. These are typical support issues. What I'm trying to do is determine what open source software would be best to use for our mail backend. The SMTP + LDAP part has basically been decided. Postfix + LDAP just was plain faster under stress than Qmail + LDAP and Sendmail + LDAP. The IMAP part has been trickier. UW IMAP had some irreconcilable issues with regards to LDAP authentication. Cyrus has my stated concerns. Courier hasn't been configured yet but looks like it might be the way to go.
