we have a Cisco/IBM solution based on 3 IBM FastT600Turbo and a Cisco MDS 9509, giving us around 56 TB of managed storage.

I don't know how SAN boxen like ibm shark & co do in such cases, i hope
they do much better than JBOD and software raid :)

So far we are very happy. One of the greatest features is flash-copy. You get nearly instantaneous backups at the logical level. Since there is also redundancy at the physical level this seems to cover most eventualities. Of course only time will tell how well this works in the real world.
