Right now, cyrus.conf is set to run it every 30 minutes:

checkpoint    cmd="ctl_cyrusdb -c" period=30

What sort of impact would there be in changing that to be less frequent? Say, once or twice a day instead?

The biggest impact would be a slower Cyrus startup (ctl_cyrusdb -r). The more frequent the checkpoints, the quicker the recovery.
