You first submit the loginname and the bracket number is the
length of the password. The server responds, go ahead give me the
password.

Here the password is subitted.

> S: L01 NO Login failed: user not found

And now the server can verify your credentials and it failed.
- I figured that out sniffing a similar session in plaintext.
