I've increased the open files limit to 2048 with no noticable difference. I'm
using Fedora Core 1 fully updated.

Hmm, checked my logs and I don't have that message anywhere in my logs
unfortunately :(
Have you check if increasing limit on per process open files
descriptors makes
any difference ? [ You reported: open files (-n) 1024 ]
What OS/Release do you use ?
