I had that same problem last week. With RedHat Enterprise 3, which is basically Red Hat 9... Still not sure what caused it exactly, so if you find out anything please let the list know. What I did notice was if I deleted all the files under /var/imap/db, it would work again until the next reboot or stopping of cyrus.. It really seemed like to me the mailboxes file was corrupted. Maybe you can try running reconstruct to see if that works for you. I didn't have much time to investigate, so I just rebuilt cyrus again and used a backedup mailboxes file that I knew was good.
